LabRats #077: Transform XP into Vista
Moving from Windows XP (or any other of the previous versions of Windows, for that matter) to Vista can be an expensive proposition. You will need all kinds of new hardware to accommodate the new operating system. But don’t despair: you can cheat a bit and make your XP machine look just like Vista in no time.
The two screens shown in LabRats Episode 77 side by side look almost the same, and only a careful observer will see the difference. So, how do you do it? First, you get yourself a Vista Transformation Kit. That’s the software that will change the look-and-feel of your XP machine as well as giving you some of the Vista functions. Technically speaking, what you get is a skin with some add-ons thrown in. Of course, there’s a plethora of applications, especially aimed at your security, built in into Vista. You can get those for your transformed XP machine, too. The funniest thing? Some of the things that do work with XP do not work with Vista. They might in the future, but they don’t yet. So, is this the reason why you should only pretend you’ve got Vista, just like the Joneses? Now, that would be up to you.
